No
visit to the Lolo Trail Center is complete without stopping in to
shop at our bookstore,
containing over 100 different titles to choose from. We have 60 books
related to Lewis & Clark and their expedition, including books on Sakajawea,
the experiences of Lewis & Clark, and even Lewis' Newfoundland dog,
Seaman. Twenty of our Lewis & Clark titles are for children.
We
also have The Lewis and Clark Journal by
Devoto;
Undaunted Courage in book form, CD, and tape as well as Perish in the
Attempt, which focuses on the medical aspects of the Lewis and Clark journey. In
addition, we have books on Montana hot springs, fishing, wildlife, ghost stories and women's
history, as well as a collection of Salish and Nez Perce titles.
While
perusing our many titles, you can also view replicas of Lewis and
Clark memorabilia, including their original 1803 rifle and two
fine-crafted, detailed
replicas; Mandan War axes; many gift
items from President Jefferson to the Indian Chiefs; displays by the Nez
Perce, Salish and Kootenai Peoples and the U.S. Forest Service;
collectibles including fine sculptures, guns and art work; and much more. For
instance, the statue to the left is titled "Lewis the
Naturalist" and is #2 in a limited edition, with #1 being owned by
the Smithsonian and which has been on display at the Whitehouse. The scene
reflects back to September 14, 1806 with Meriwether Lewis standing on the
bank of the Missouri River examining a 'raccoon grape', the last plant
collected on the expedition. Lewis and his Newfoundland, Seaman, represent
the peaceful intent and scientific achievement of the expedition. A stroll over to the Lolo Trail Center bookstore is like taking a step
back in time and should be at the top of any visitor's list! Here's
a preview in pictures of what you'll find:
